Personality:

Both Fenris's outward appearance and demeanor is very prickly. The fact that he normally wears things with lots of spikes and jagged edges aside, he tends to keep everyone at a distance and withdraws the moment it seems as if they're getting too close. Having grown up in servitude with a master who etched something he deemed valuable into his skin, he's used to being viewed as an object — a trophy meant to show off and even in many instances intimidate his master's guests just for the hell of it. He's accustomed to being 'off putting' and was often made to serve wine to his master's guests just to intimidate them for his amusement. As mentioned above his outward appearance isn't the most subtle (in Varric's own words Fenris screams, "I hate you all, I was a slave"). Fenris gets touchy and expresses disdain for "cowering in the shadows". He's brazen for an escaped slave, refusing to run any longer to the point of stubbornness. Funnily enough, his body language is that of a paranoiac, with the way he's constantly (literally) looking over his shoulder all hunched over as if ready to be on the attack. For as paranoid as he is though, he still refuses to hide and would rather let whoever is to come for him, come for him.

While a normally wary person, his hatred of magic and those who abuse it can make him stubbornly mistrustful. Although he acknowledges that not every mage will fall to temptation of demons it is a constant risk in his mind and as he puts it; "how many temptations are you willing to offer a man before he gives in?" His hatred was born from magic playing a part in nearly every aspect of his brutal upbringing, especially considering he lived in Tevinter, a place where mages walked freely and unchecked. The markings that cover his body were the result of experimentation from his master, who etched lyrium into his skin. Lyrium is a highly volatile mineral-like substance that causes both psychological and physical harm when in direct contact. As you can imagine the process of infusing lyrium into his skin was actual torture, so painful that it resulted in the loss of his memories. It's also the reason Danarius finds him so valuable as to go through the ends of Thedas just to find him. This only fuels Fenris's hatred for magic as it has officially taken everything away from him; Danarius essentially rewrote his personality to suit his own needs, and after Hawke gives him up to Danarius he fully intends to do it again, evident in the note he sends Hawke assuring them that Fenris won't remember anything from Kirkwall.

Which brings up the subject of Hawke. Now being a malleable protagonist Hawke can be any class, but for the sake of continuity and narrative for Fenris's personal history Hawke is a mage. Fenris's first encounter with Hawke is a positive one, as he agreed to help him clear out Danarius's mansion of his bounty hunters. Despite this Fenris still calls him out on being a mage and questions what kind he is. If Hawke asks if there's a problem Fenris will apologize for sounding ungrateful, admitting that whether or not Hawke isn't the kind of mage he thinks remains to be seen, but offers his services in gratitude anyway. Over time he accepts that Hawke is a mage worthy of trust because he's proven to have self control and doesn't fall prey to temptation. So while Fenris's hatred can be blinding he definitely has moments of clarity where he can keep an open mind, it's just that he's very strict about his leniency regarding this subject. It's a difficult thing for him to let go of and he admits that his past and experiences are like a poison he can't stop swallowing. And while Fenris and Hawke had several points of contention regarding magic and mages Fenris grew to trust him. Unfortunately that trust turned out to be what ultimately bites him in the ass. Being lured into a trap by his own sister, who is also a mage, Danarius is finally able to find Fenris, and when Hawke decides to give Fenris up whatever positive development he may have made in becoming more trusting have been completely significantly set back. This doesn't even begin to speak of his attitude towards magic and mages, whereas before then he showed a willingness to give mages a chance to prove themselves, now he would rather maintain distance between himself and anything relating to magic if he can help it.

His stand offish, lone-wolf-like attitude aside Fenris has a sarcastic and joking streak to him. He surprises his traveling companions quite a few times by cracking a joke, like claiming to run from room to room in his abandoned mansion choreographing routines. It's even revealed he plays a game with Isabella where she tries to guess the color of his underwear. He's also not completely incapable of physical intimacy, usually without emotional attachment, seeing as how he hooks up with Isabella if neither of them or in a relationship with Hawke. Banter in the game also reveals that he eventually begins to play cards with Varric, whom I believe the 'doesn't pry into a man's emotional well being' method works in allowing Fenris to loosen up ever so slightly. He responds best to people who don't pry too hard into his past or try to get him to open up when he's not ready. He can also be fiercely loyal when it is earned, so much so that should Hawke gain enough favor with him and side with the mages, Fenris will express his disapproval but still follow them into battle, despite the fact that the cause directly opposes his strong beliefs. A flip side to his loyalty is his acquiescence. There have been a couple of times in his history, when Hawke turns him in included, when Fenris gives into this notion that his servitude is "inevitable" and therefore puts up no fight to go with the man who would make him a slave. Living as a slave for literally as long as he can remember means he knows nothing else and sometimes falls into the habit of accepting the situation forced upon him as he sees no other option. It's the reason why, while he says he doesn't fear death, he will go back to Tevinter with Danarius instead of going down with a fight.
